This 11-page conjunctions pack for 1st grade teaches students to join two sentences with "and" only when both sentences are about the same subject. Page 1 opens with a rule box and a worked example ("Tim was at the park. Tim was wearing a red hat." becomes "Tim was at the park and wearing a red hat.") and then gives 5 pairs to combine. Pages 2–11 add a decision. Each page has 5 sentence pairs, and students either write the combined sentence or cross the pair out. "Sam fed the fish. Sam cleaned the tank." can be joined; "We went to the park. It started raining." cannot, because the subjects are different. Many pairs use a pronoun for the second subject ("Ella brushed her teeth. She went to bed."), so students also have to notice that "Ella" and "she" are the same person. Every page from 2 to 11 ends with a challenge box: pick a pair that couldn't be combined and rewrite it so that it can. That makes 55 sentence pairs in all, plus 10 challenge tasks.
