CVC Decodable Stories with Comprehension | 10 Short Vowel Word Family Passages | 1st Grade
Ribbit — ESL/EFL Worksheet Resource
This 10-page set of decodable CVC stories gives 1st graders one short story for each word-family group, built almost entirely from words they can sound out, with three quick activities underneath. The nine stories cover ab/ad/ag/am (Gab's Ham Bag), an/ap/at (Dan's Mat), it/in/ig/id (Sid and a Mad Pig), ip/ix/ib/im (Jim's Bib), ob/ot/og (Bob and his Dog), op/ox/od (Fox in a Box), un/ut/ud (A Nun's Suds), and the en and ub families. A tenth page, A Bug on a Hat, mixes all five short vowels and asks children to find and write a word for each vowel. Each story is four lines long, for example "Todd is a fox. Todd hops in a box. The box has a cod and a rod." Before reading, children find and circle four words from the story. Afterwards they complete a sentence from the story, then do two short tasks that change from page to page: unscramble a word, match rhyming words, fix two wrong sentences, colour each word or circle the right picture.
