This 14-page CVC set has 1st graders look at a picture, tick the matching short vowel word from three choices, write it, then read two lists of six CVC words against the clock. Nine pages each cover one group of word families: ab/ad/ag/am, an/ap/at, en/et/eg/ed, it/in/ig/id, ip/ix/ib/im, ob/ot/og, op/ox/od, ub/ug/um and un/ut/ud. Five review pages then mix the families for each vowel: Short A, E, I, O and U Review. Every page has eight picture rows, and the three choices differ by only one sound (dab, dad, bab), so children have to look closely at each letter rather than guess from the first sound. The timed lists at the foot of each page ("wag, cab, jam, dad, sad, ham") give a quick fluency check. Children read the list as fast as they can and write their time in the stopwatch box, then try to beat it on another day.
