Ribbit — ESL/EFL Worksheet Resource

These 10 pronoun worksheets each tell a short illustrated story with the subject and object pronouns taken out, so 1st graders choose he, she, it, they, we, I, us or you from a word box and write it in each gap. The stories are The Park, At School, The Birthday Cake, Going to the Zoo, A Rainy Day, Lost Hat, Helping Grandma, Snowy Day, My Pet Cat and The Picnic. Each one is four to six sentences long, for example: "Tom and I went to the park. ___ played on the swings. Then Tom saw a dog. ___ ran over to pet it." Children have to work out who or what each gap refers to, which makes this real reading for meaning rather than guessing from a pattern. The instructions tell children that some pronouns are used more than once and some not at all. Several stories include speech ("Thank ___!"), which brings in you and us. The Picnic swaps she for his in its word box, so one gap takes a possessive.
