ESL Sub Binder and Emergency Sub Plans | Substitute Teacher Binder for English Learners | 1st-2nd Grade

Ribbit — ESL/EFL Worksheet Resource

This 30-page ESL sub binder pairs 15 fill-in substitute binder pages for any K–3 class with a no-prep emergency sub day for 1st and 2nd grade, written so English learners can take part. The binder section is a cover and 14 pages the class teacher fills in by hand: a welcome letter with a "people who can help" table, Class at a Glance, a daily schedule, routines, rules and rewards, a seating plan, Health and Extra Help (marked private), emergency information with a draw-your-exit map, how each child goes home, a 30-name class list and a "How did today go?" report for the substitute to leave behind. Three pages are built around English learners. My English Learners lists each child's home language, an English level (New, Beginning, Growing or Confident) and what helps them, such as a buddy or a seat near the front. Helping English Learners Today gives the substitute eight plain tips, including "slow down, not louder" and leaving a child in a silent period alone, plus a table for key words like Hello, Bathroom and Help in the class's home languages. A page of 12 picture cards (Listen, Line up, Bathroom, Finished and more) can be cut out and kept on a ring. The emergency sub day is about two and a half hours of work. Plan 1 is a timed lesson plan, and Plan 2 has the Listen and Draw script, a Talking Ball circle game and six no-prep extra-time games such as Four Corners and I Spy Sounds. Nine student pages follow an original 150-word story, A New Teacher for Fox, about a fox whose teacher is away: morning check-in, the story, comprehension questions, vocabulary matching, rhyming words, a partner interview, opinion writing about trying something new, a listen-and-draw page with position words, and an end-of-day reflection with a note to the class teacher. Teacher notes cover setup (about 40 minutes the first time), privacy and how to adapt the sub day for kindergarten or 3rd grade. An answer key and CCSS references (RL.1.1, RL.2.1, L.1.4, SL.1.1, W.1.1 and others) are included. An editable PowerPoint version is sold on TpT; this download is the PDF.
