About this pack

This 60-page set of winter writing prompts gives kindergarten to 3rd grade and ESL/EFL students one prompt per page, each with its own word bank of six or seven winter words.

Every page has the same layout: a title, a name line, a large box for a picture, an "Ideas" word bank, primary handwriting lines (solid lines with a dashed midline), and a "Did I…" self-check at the bottom with six boxes: use capitals, use end marks, write your name, draw a picture, use spaces and read it aloud. On pages 1 to 49 a sentence starter is printed in light gray on the first lines, such as "In winter…", "The polar bear can…" or "If I were a snowman…", so beginning writers can trace it and keep going.

The prompts get harder as the set goes on. Pages 1–10 are simple topics like My Winter Clothes, Snow Day! and A Little Penguin. Pages 11–20 ask students to describe something (the snowman, the igloo, the mittens, the hot chocolate) with a word bank of adjectives such as fluffy, icy and cozy. Pages 21–30 are short animal stories, from A Penguin's Day to Rabbit Goes Sledding, with action verbs in the word bank. Pages 31–49 are story starters and "what if" prompts, including The Door Opened, The Frozen Box, If I could fly to the North Pole… and If winter lasted all year… Pages 50–59 drop the sentence starter for more open prompts such as Invent a New Hot Drink and The Bear Who Was Scared of Snow. Page 60 is a blank template with an empty title line. Nothing is tied to Christmas, so the set works from December through February.
