Japanese Yokai Folktales Reading Comprehension | 7 Halloween Stories | Grade 2 ESL

Ribbit — ESL/EFL Worksheet Resource

This 7-page set gives Grade 2 students seven short Halloween-themed reading passages, each built around a different yokai (spirit or monster) from Japanese folklore, with a full page of comprehension questions after every story. Each of the 7 stories features one yokai: Karakasa-obake (an umbrella that comes to life), Kappa (a river spirit that loves cucumbers), Yuki-onna (the Snow Woman), Kitsune (a shape-shifting nine-tailed fox), Noppera-bō (a faceless ghost), Oni (a demon who is secretly afraid of the dark), and Chouchin-obake (a paper lantern ghost). Every story page pairs the 150–200 word narrative with a real-world "yokai fact" callout box and a facing page of 4–5 questions — a mix of literal recall, sequencing, vocabulary-in-context, true/false, and short-answer inference prompts.
