About this pack
This 14-page pack has 10 one-page Christmas reading passages for 2nd grade: six short stories and four nonfiction pages, each with three or four comprehension questions and a drawing box.
The stories are "The Tree That Was Too Tall" (Mia finds a room where the tree fits), "Max and the Missing Cookie" (crumbs lead to the puppy), "The Quiet Bell" (a scarf stops the town bell on Christmas Eve), "Pip and the Big Bike" (an elf learns to ask for help), "The Snow Fort" and "A Present for Grandpa" (a handmade gift). The nonfiction pages cover Christmas in Japan, Christmas in Australia, reindeer facts and how the Christmas tree tradition started in Germany.
The question types change from page to page, so students can't fall into one pattern: putting events in order, true or false, a story-map with problem and solution, cause-and-effect sentence starters, first-next-then-finally retelling, matching reindeer body parts to what they do, choosing the best title, and word meaning in context (clever, herds). Many answers begin with a printed sentence frame such as "Mia's idea was good because", which helps ESL students write in full sentences.
