Money Word Problems in Cents | Adding and Subtracting Cents | 1st Grade Math
Ribbit — ESL/EFL Worksheet Resource
This 10-page money word problems pack for 1st grade has 50 short problems about spending, saving and finding coins, with every price and starting amount at 10 cents or less. Each page has 5 problems of two or three lines. Some ask how much is left ("Ben has 10c. He spends 8c. How much money does he have left?"), some ask for a total spent ("Tim buys a flower for 3c. He buys another for 4c."), and some ask how much two children have together. In many problems a small picture stands in for the item, such as a banana, ball, toy car or sandwich, which helps early readers. A few problems end in a fill-in sentence ("Lily spent ___ in total.") instead of a question. Amounts are written with a plain "c" for cents, with no coin pictures, so this is about adding and subtracting money amounts rather than counting coins. There is no answer key, and a handful of sentences have small slips (for example "How is left?"), so read them through before handing them out.
